What is the best way to make the notch? i was thinking of a dremole tool with a thin disk. also whitch is better notching the dog like a mb 550 or on the pan side?

Most trappers use a small file and do it by hand,though I have heard of some using a Dremel tool.If you are good with a Dremel tool try one or two traps and see how it comes out,be careful and try not to take too much off,it is hard to put it back on.

Mike,
Like Gail said, a file will make pretty quick work of night latching your traps and is ALOT easier (IMO) to control so you don't remove too much material.
Personally I would night latch the dog instead of the pan on the 550 as it will be easier to get at and if you do mess one up replacements are cheaper.
