I havent used any dog proof traps before but after seeing some of the demos at the different conventions Im sure thinking of it but Im wondering if they are also house cat proof? I have a few areas that are rolling in coons but are close to some houses with cats .

Im wondering if they are also house cat proof? NO THEY ARE NOT CAT PROOF! As a matter of fact I have heard of cases where they have actually caught K9s whether it being domestic or not. For the most part you will be safe using them around domestic cats if you are using a sweet based bait such as marshmallows or fruit based bait as cats seem not to have interest in these, if you use any kind of fish based bait you CAN & WILL catch cats unless you are trapping right tight to the waters edge. I run about 300 Lil Griz traps in a season up here in Wisconsin and may only catch a cat or two all season but are easily released without harm.

Thanks Todd while I selpt on it I was thinking of going to a sweet bait .I do some trapping around chicken houses ( we have plenty of ) and they are usually around houses and cats but hold tons of coons sometimes but have been haveing to get pretty far away to try and stay clear I dont want to cause any of us problems . Ive been looking at the Alcatraz traps and they have even a bigger opening .What kind of damage does it do to coons ?

I can't comment on any DP trap other than the Lil Grizz as that is the only one I personally own and use but after examining others I would be at ease in saying they should be as easy on the animal as the Lil Grizz.
As for a larger opening I personally don't think it reply matters as a coon will work a pretty small hole provided the bit in that hole appeals to their taste buds.
I would suggest looking into the Duke brand DP as they are an exact copy of the Lil Grizz other than the stake system and are considerably less expensive. I actually like the stake system on them better than the Lil Grizz.
Hope this helps?

The thing I liked about the alcatraz is the door in the back so you can clean them out and to me are tons easier to set

The duke dp's are a good solid trap, springs are plenty strong, just bait and go. Only problem i have with them are tractors really like them for some reason. haha. Todd is right on using sweet baits to keep the kitties and the black and white kitties out of your trap.

can u bury a duke trap that look like the lil grizz No these traps are not designed to be buried. Burrying these traps would impeed the spring and, trigger and dog action causing misses or complete missfires.

Even though the dog-proof traps are specialized and expensive,I can see in the future they may well come to be the ticket to large coon catches. The competition to build a cheaper, more efficient mouse trap has resulted in more reasonably priced choices and types of dog-proof traps. It's truly a blessing to be a trapper in the twenty-first century when everything goes as it is supposed to,the best is yet to come, hopefully.
