I bought a couple of Duke DP traps and wanted to try them out. I know coons aren't worth anything but figure I can thin them out to help turkey nesting. Anyway, I set out a couple and had one tripped. The coon wasn't there but when I got to looking; I saw it had chewed it's foot off right at the trap. Is this common with that type of trap? Do you think maybe the leg was broken by the trap which made it easier? I've seen them chew their foot under the jaws of a regular trap and sometimes pull out but I'm new to this trap. Any ideas/suggestions to prevent another incident? Thanks!

Sounds like a wring off, was it set where it could wrap up and not swivel?

In hindsight, I guess so. The chain wrapped around a small bush so it might be the problem. Thanks again!

I would bet that was the problem. The trap doesn't have enough force to break bone when it fires. Breaks usually happen from the animal fighting.

I have personally never had a ring off with DP's. Like Clint said, they aren't strong enough to break the leg when they fire.
