Hi guys I've been getting into snaring hogs for the past few months but no hogs caught yet. I have had really good luck with finding good trails to set up on. My last time out I set 8 snares and all were hit but no hogs were caught. Snares were stretched out so I know they didn't just fall down.
My set up: 1/8 gac 10' long with a sure lock and whammy. Using #9 wire for my support wire twisted tightly around a tree. I have been setting my snares about 8-10" off the ground. I have now found out by newt Sterling and from reading on here that I should be setting them about 6" off the ground.
I have ordered newts DVD on hog snaring but is there anything I should know that not covered in his DVD?

The majority of what I learned of hog snaring is on the dvd, however, I am using 1/8th inch surelock on 3 / 32 cable, newt uses slim lock. I support my snares different also. I use 9 wire with electric tape instead of a whammy. I stick the wire straight in the ground at least 5-6 inches 14 inch loop 6 inches off ground

Hogs are a very powerful animal, keep that in mind when anchoring. I don't tie off to anything smaller than 8 inch diameter

Man I've been anchoring to small trees like 4" diameter. I'm glad I didn't catch any so far. I'll make sure to anchor to bigger trees from now on.
Why do you use 1/8 locks on 3/32 wire?

It's faster, also has a lot more metal which is stronger. They still will straighten the lock

I've snared a pile of them on the deer lease I had in TX. I was running 1/8" 7x7~camlocks~ whammys and # 9 supports on 6' of 1/4" extension cable. 6" off of the trail with a 20" loop. Attachments:

I have found they usually don't fight as hard snared by the snout

It's also best to put a pile of snares on each trail. Trails tend to go dead after a catch some time

I have seen them quit a trail all together and have seen them take a few weeks to months, depends on the hogs

I should have the DVD today I can't wait to watch it. I feel like I'm so close to getting a few hogs snared it just sucks that my lease is 4 hrs away so I can't just run out there and try it.
