Anybody tried making any.I got a can of makeral and i was going to see if i can make alittle in a jar.I hope regular old house salt will work for my experiment.I was kinda wondering does it actually need to be in the sun or would in a shed away from the flies work?

I was going to layer the fish and salt and hopefully come out with the same fish oil i buy.If others can do it i would like to be able to make it too....These coon around here will eat anything. And sometimes you do have to get a few possums out of the way to get to the good stuff. The grinners around here come to fresh smell too.

im going to give it a try and just see what i come up with.may have to use old t shirt for cheese cloth...If i could render some just once i think i would be satisfied just nowing i could do it.The tricky parts going to be keeping the neighborhoods cats away.A man might need to set the rendering contraption inside a rabbit cage to keep the critters away.

I have had good results by using carp cutting them in small Pisces and placing them in a gallon glass jar and putting a small glass pane over the top of the jar with a small weight on the top of the glass,if you use a small weight this will allow the gases to escape. But all the time it takes to make fish oil you can buy a good fish oil and stay out of trouble with your spouse. Skunk spray has nothing on rotten fish oil. IMO

Actually im hoping mine smells like regular fish oil.Im going to layer it starting with salt then fish then salt just like a old trapper told me to do.Im going to do it in a jar first and see how that turns out.If it dont then ill get me a sack of rock salt and a bunch of fish and a ice chest with a spout and try it that way--thats how i was told to do it.

well i did it,I took a mayo jar, poked a hole in its lid and stretched an old sock over lid to keep the flys out.layered the fish and salt-salt first-then fish...I poured the juice in the mackeral can in the jar,,not sure if i should have did that.My lure recipe call for rock salt but all i had was table salt so thats what i used.If this dont produce some yellow gold ill start over with rock salt and some none proccessed fish.

Got 2 more jars of jack mack and salt going today. These will be in the shed through the rendering process.Setting by a window.Im hoping for a well preserved fish smell.I dont want it to smell like rottening flesh. What ever it turns out to be im going to let my son introduce it to mr coon!lol that generic jack mack sure got a big sardine smell all ready. They recipe i have calls for the rendering to take place in a ice chest and produce a gt of liguid gold every 48 hrs.Ill be happy if i just get a few ounce of oil for my youngster to trap with!

This is a early observation, but im thinking that the jar in the sun began rendering oil quicker than the 2 in the shed.I moved 1 of the jars that was in the shed ,,to the roof.Im looking t see if this speeds the rendering of the oil.

:)Checked the smell of my first jar of sun rendered fish--no rotten smell at all at this point. So far the common table salt i used seems to be doing a fine job as a preservative.
