I am first year trapper and am staring with coil spring traps. In all of my reading and research into this I am trying to understand the difference between using coil spring or long spring traps. from what I can tell they will both basically do the same job with the coil spring having an advantage in that is has a smaller profile in trap bed. Is it strictly personal preference or is there really a situation when one is better suited to a task then the other?

I like to use coil sring because they are easy to bed and compacked, but when i'am coon trapping i like the #11 long spring there is little room for the coon to get to his foot ,but i have caught lot's of fox and coyotes in a long spring .when i'am land trapping i use coil springs but when i'am water trapping i use #11 long springs, hope this helps you in your trapping.

I used LS #2 s for ever till they all went away for water trapping now use mostly 1.5 coils but aint nothing wrong with #11s I use pocket sets mostly and I just can get a coil where I want it better .I use coils for land trapping for dirthole sets and LS for flat sets mostly cause I like the way they look much as anything but either will do the job .I guess there are alot of mods you can do to coils but then there are some you can do to LS as well

As a general rule long springs in water and coil springs on land,it will serve you well starting out.I love the long springs and they were all I used coming up,no lure, bait,or urine, just long spring traps,a hatchet, and some fence staples.I held my own with any trapper in my area, thanks to my Grandfather's tutoring.I do like to use #2and#3 long springs to make exposed walk through sets, they set up real nice and steady in these applications and hold anything that puts their foot in them.
