Tell him to get rid of the kneeling bag it's a BIG waste of time. He is setting those traps bare handed as well as handling everything bare handed, how much scent do you think he is leaving doing that? The animal knows to a certain extent that we were there just have him to practice making his set and make it as fast and efficient as he can it will leave less scent at the site.
Better yet, get him a set of knee pads from a home center like Home Depot, Lowes, Menards.
I would dig the hole deeper and a steeper angle to get the animal to commit to the set better.

Thanks for the advice. Bare handed was just for the video for his school assignment, normally he does wear gloves during his sets.
Knee pads would be easier to carry beings he would wear them. NICE!
Agree on the steeper angle. Nice information. Thanks for your comments and your time.

Toby,
It doesn't matter setting bare handed versus gloved in my opinion. I do wear gloves setting but for the only reason as to help keep my hands cleaner and to keep them from drying out and my fingers splitting.
Hard to beat a dirthole for catching about any land animal. i would also tell Ryan to make more of a trench or step down style dirthole, once that animal commits it is impossible for it to back out. Kinda like when you are walking down a set of stairs, once you step and your weight is in motion there aint know way to pull your leg back up.
I also like to set my trap so the animal steps between the jaws aposed to over them.

Todd purdy much said everything that I saw. Wear gloves as they will protect your hands and your hands are everything when setting traps. I too use knee pads from a hard wear store. One thing I do is make sure my dog is set at 1pm to 3pm. I want to make sure the animal is stepping over the spring depressors not the jaws. And make the hole a lot deeper and and more up and down. Good video and good project. Good to see more young men getting involved and doing school projects on it. Spread the word.
