Dog proofs without bait. Most of my trap line this year will be on state WMAs. Under state regs, no bait (anything ingested) can be used on WMAs. I was wondering if anyone has run dog proofs without bait. I have a few ideas such as tying cotton balls at the bottom of the cylinder under the trap trigger and soaking it in a strong lure. Has anyone tried something like this? Running DPs on state land would sure open up some new possibilities for me.
Bobcats. Are there limits on bobcats for trappers? Are WMAs and private land different? The state regs say 1 per year for each hunter which I understand, but are trappers included in the definition of 'hunter'? I assume you are unlimited as long as you are trapping and not shooting them? Don't want to get in trouble and looking for a good answer... Haven't gotten a straight answer from Wildlife and fisheries yet.
Any info would be appreciated.

I think baiting is talking about hunting. You can have more than one bobcat but you will need possession tags

I guess that is where my confusion comes from. All WMA regulations reference hunting and taking of game animals. For trapping it says to see trapping regulations and Trapping regulations same "Same as outside" for the WMA. Last time I talked to wildlife and fisheries they couldn't give me straight answer. I can't afford to get in trouble with the law so I want to know what I can and can't do...
You need possession tags for bobcats? I thought you only need the tags if you transport/ship bobcats/otter out of state.

Daniel, the first question is the use of bait. It is legal to use bait for trapping on WMA's. It is the same as out side. The possession tags are required if you plan to ship out of state. Who at wildlife and fisheries did you talk to?

I talked with an enforcement agent in the Pearl River WMA concerning the bait. Can't remember a name. He seemed to have a hard time separating 'hunter' and 'trapper' in the regs and ended up just telling me the regs said no bait on WMAs when I asked. But then he said whatever it says for the "outside" when we talked about otter trapping on WMAs.
For the bobcat, I talked with Christian in the Hammond office last year. I got the impression from him that I could only take one bobcat per year from WMAs.
I don't have no complaints they were both nice when I talked with them. I just ended the conversations a little confused and am having trouble separating what is required differently between hunters and trappers on WMAs.

The one bobcat limit only applies to holders of big game liscenses. Your trappers liscense enables you to trap or snare as many bobcats as you can. Like Tony said, perfectly legal to use bait for furbearers while trapping on WMA's.
Sounds like you won't have much competition down there judging by how misinformed the wardens are. They apparently aren't dealing with many trappers.
