It is not legal to trap cougars in the state of Louisiana. After reports were confirmed by LWDF in the state, they expedited laws to cover the taking of Mt. Lions/cougars.
As for the cat track that is three inches across, I will bet you have a rather large tom bobcat. A cougar track is much larger with large toes. I have seen quite a few large tom bobcats that leave 3 inch tracks.

Like the others have stated its against the law but if you should happen to catch one call LWDF and dont worry there will be more folks than you can count out there to get it out of your trap for you

True story,I went to a hunter's education class in Baton Rouge in 2005.The head instructor,a LDWF employee, who had gone to the FTA trapping college in Indiana, asked us what were the predator species in Louisiana. After the usual replies,I raised my hand and said cougars,to which he replied there were none because none had ever been found run over on the interstate highways in Louisiana.Later,I got him off to the side and told him I personally had seen one across the Mississippi River in Brusly. He all but called me a liar, and passed my account of the sighting off as the rambling of a foolish old man. That very next trapping season he was trapping in the exact area I told him I saw the cougar in Brusly.I have seen mountain lions out West and in Old Mexico,I have even caught one in New Mexico in a Victor 1.75 with #3 music wire springs,it was a rodeo of a release. There are cougars or panthers,a more correct description in my book,in Louisiana. The habitat they seem to prefer are areas with a large deer population near large rivers and swamps. In our area here it seems they are always around sugar cane fields near the Mississippi River on large deer leases. There are also sightings of these cats in Mississippi along the Pearl,Bogue Chitto, Amite,Buffalo, and Mississippi Rivers by experienced outdoorsmen. It was not that long ago that they killed the last jaguars in Louisiana and Texas, they are both spotted and black. When I lived in Corpus Christi,Texas back in the early 1980's I trapped and hoped to catch a jaguarundi, look that up,but there were cougars being killed in that general area back then,so in thirty years they could easily disperse as far as western Louisiana. You have to be out in the woods a lot,in the right area, and aware of what you are looking for because after you catch a glimpse of them, you will question your own eyes as to what you have just seen.

I've had bears tear up sets.only held one cub problem was mom wasn't trapped and I thought it was a fisher coon.when it turned and looked at me it wasn't o crap I said lol.the mother smacked it out of the 11/2 coil.I have been out west trapping around cougars.and u always see shred marks on the backs of yearling steers.I've never seen that except out there.you see a lion track u don't wonder if it is a bobcat.
